But it was the other major foreign policy priority, climate change, that the Australian foreign minister sought to put on ice. The opposition leader, Bill Shorten, raised the issue last week, saying Australia had become a "sceptic" of global warming and refused to act on climate change.
The government's own environment minister, Josh Frydenberg, said this week the government was "committed to getting serious about climate change".
Australia had adopted its own emissions trading scheme to curb carbon emissions and was working with countries such as New Zealand, to develop a national climate change plan. It had also announced a new climate change-related policy aimed at tackling emissions.
"We're not in the 'climate change denialist' camp but we believe in the science," said Frydenberg, who did not directly blame global warming for the collapse of the last ice age. "There are many scientists who are skeptical about climate change and there are a lot of people who are committed to the science but they don't believe it's the main factor that's driving our problems."
Frydenberg was responding to an online op-ed by an influential Australian conservative, Tim Flannery, who called on Labor to support the carbon tax but warned it was only a first step towards Australia becoming a major greenhouse gas polluter.
"The Greens are the party of policy, with the prime minister the policy president. The Greens are the party of policy-making but on this issue they're like the Conservatives who think the economy is to blame for poor performance," Flannery wrote.
He also wrote: "Frydenberg's column does little to change the underlying point about Abbott's government: the Abbott government has decided to pursue a policy of policy denial."
However, the opposition leader, Bill Shorten, said Australia needed to do more to curb greenhouse gases. "The problem with this Abbott administration is the Abbott government is committed to global warming denial, which is an incredibly dangerous policy, with no basis in climate science," Shorten said.
Shorten also accused the Labor party of a lack of "decisiveness and a lack of leadership", the Australian newspaper reported.
The Abbott government would not be the first government to face questions over its climate change policies – the previous one, in the Howard years, had to backtrack.
Shorten also said the climate change issue should be a political football, where party leaders can "get up and do the talking".
Frydenberg also faced questions from media outlets over the cost to the country of the carbon tax, which is aimed at reducing emissions from the electricity sector.
"If we can do it, why can't other nation
